As a general rule, applying a car wax every 4 to 8 weeks is a good starting point, but it depends on the product you're using and how your car is treated. If you're using a high-quality liquid car wax or carnauba-based paste, you can expect it to last a couple of months before it needs refreshing.
Cars that are garage-kept and only driven occasionally will need less frequent waxing than daily drivers exposed to sun, rain and road grime. If you're using a spray wax for maintenance, it can be topped up after every second or third wash to keep your protection fresh and your paint looking sharp.
Each type of car wax brings its own strengths. Paste waxes are known for their deep, rich gloss and long-lasting protection, especially when using a traditional carnauba car wax. They tend to be more time-consuming to apply and buff, but the finish is often unmatched in warmth and depth.
Liquid car wax is a great all-rounder. It offers a good balance between shine, durability and ease of use. It’s also versatile enough for both hand and machine application. Spray wax is the fastest and easiest option to apply, making it ideal for topping up protection between full details. It's not quite as durable, but it’s perfect for quick maintenance or touch-ups before a weekend drive.
Most car waxes will offer solid protection for around 1 to 3 months, depending on the type of wax, how the car is stored, and how often it’s exposed to the elements. For example, a carnauba car wax might give you incredible depth and warmth in the finish, but it won’t last as long as a synthetic blend or hybrid wax.
If your car lives outdoors or sees regular daily use, you might find the wax starts to wear off a little sooner. To keep your finish protected and looking its best, we recommend inspecting water beading or slickness after each wash and reapplying when performance starts to drop off.
If applying by hand:
Wash and thoroughly dry the car completely to ensure optimal surface for wax to bind to.
Grab your hand foam applicator pad and add just a small amount of either liquid or paste wax or spray wax to the applicator. Remember only a small amount is needed and you should only be working on a small section at a time to ensure the area is properly covered with the wax.
Using a gentle, circular motion, start working in the wax into a 2-3 square feet section of the vehicle.
Allow the wax to haze, following the manufacturers instructions as the time to haze can vary depending on the brand. On average, this takes a few minutes.
Buff the wax using a clean, dry microfiber cloth or towel. Use light pressure and flip the mf cloth frequently to avoid spreading the residue.
Inspect the finished section for any missed spots or streaks that might have been missed. If needed, reapply wax to any areas that were missed.
Move onto next section of the panel and repeat the process.
Once complete, finish up by completing a final pass with a fresh microfiber cloth to ensure a consistent shine and remove any remaining residue.
If applying using a machine polisher (with a liquid wax)
Wash and thoroughly dry the car.
Attach a finishing pad to your machine polisher.
Apply the wax to the pad. Only a pea sized amount is recommended.
Whilst switched off or using a low speed, spread the wax over a small section of the car to avoid splatter.
Using a slow speed, work the wax into the paint using overlapping passes. Use light to moderate pressure and move the polisher in a slow, controlled manner to ensure even coverage.
